I figured that since I’m such a fan of maps of all sorts, I’d add a page here of the maps I’ve created for my various writing projects. Feel free to scoff at my (lack of) cartographic skills, as well as the lack of quality with some of my photos. I plan on improving those images soon. I promise.

First, here’s a map of the world of Bartamus, from the online comic In Maps & Legends — go read the first pages of the comic at DC Comics’ Zuda site:
This is the map I used for my young-adult urban fantasy novel A Sudden Outbreak of Magic:
This map was used by Jay Lake and myself as we were writing “Devil on the Wind,” a story we sold to Black Gate, due out in late 2009:
These two maps are for a world that I tried to write a novel about, but got stuck. Making the maps was fun, though!
And of course, the map that got me started down this path, years ago:
And this one, too…
Also, for inspiration or further reading and viewing, there are a ton of resources and blogs about maps, including:
- Strange Maps
- The Map Room
- Fantasy Cartography
- GeoCarta
- Ogle Earth
- Martin Waldseemüller’s 1507 world map (the first map to show the Western hemisphere)
Finally — stories about maps and mapmakers. If you know of a good cartography-related story, please let me know!
- “The Mappist,” by Barry Lopez (the last paragraph is just awesome)
- “Salting the Map” by Alan DeNiro (read it twice to get all the subtleties)
